The Buzz Bin’s “On Deadline” series introduces you to members of this team with a short Q&A. Meet Leah Kondes, currently reaching out to Twin Cities media about a new campaign from a local nonprofit related to health equity.

Q: How did you become interested in media relations?

A: The university I attended did not have a communications major when I was there, but I wrote for the college newspaper, had a show on the college radio station and did a couple of unpaid internships for locally produced television programs. I wanted to return to the Twin Cities after graduation, and this is a great market both for agencies and media.

Q: What are the top three things you need in a successful pitch?

A: Three things you need in a successful pitch are:

Q: What are your thoughts and observations on the ever-changing media landscape?

A: We know that newsrooms are shrinking, so the easier we can make it for journalists to do their jobs, the better.

Q: What’s your go-to outlet for news and why?

A: I spend so much time in front of a screen for work that I prefer to limit my screen time outside the office. I get the Star Tribune (major daily Minnesota paper) on my doorstep every morning, and over lunch you’ll find me in the kitchen at work reading the New York Times and USA Today. I also like to maximize my drive time by listening to public radio.

Q: What is your advice for a communication professional experiencing anxiety about pitching media?

A: The worst thing they can do is say no. You never know unless you try. They are just people, and the truth is you have the same goals: providing good content for their audience.
