Navigating COVID-19 Coverage (7.27.20)

Padilla’s Insights + Strategy and Digital/Social teams scanned the news media and social media conversations surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic to bring you the week’s noteworthy developments:

Daniel Tiger, WFH Balance (or not), Shock Value

When a new season of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood launches on PBS next month, the mega-popular kids’ series will tackle the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic and strive to provide parents, toddlers, and preschoolers with a little bit of extra support.

Microsoft conducted a study on behaviors coming out of our new work-from-home normal and found that our workdays are getting longer and we’re spending more time in meetings.

Taking social distancing to a new extreme: a British pub installed an electric fence in front of their bar to encourage social distancing.

Topic Mapping

News surrounds how 18 states set single-day case records in the past week and as cases rise testing is making news as people across the U.S. are still waiting days/weeks to get test results. Negative sentiment is mainly attached to the rising cases along with the news around a stalled recovery as unemployment is up after a period of plateauing.

Trending searches on coronavirus this past week were heavy on housing/rent with topics like “delinquent on rent” and “breaking a lease during COVID.” People also wondered about the meaning of a 70% wage replacement and the new CDC guidelines on reopening schools.

Social Buzz

In the social sphere, the number of mentions increased again, as the spike in U.S. cases drives more conversation. California shuts down again as cases surge. Twitter users complain about people not using masks, sharing reasons why it’s so important. Notably, President Trump is not present in the conversation as he had been in previous months. He tweeted about the virus only four times in the past four weeks.

COVID Creativity

People have gotten very creative during the pandemic. One man in Pittsburgh came up with a drive-thru billboard art exhibition – from paintings to drawings to photos, you can follow the map to see them all in the first-of-its-kind art museum billboard tour.
