There’s no doubt that the pandemic has changed consumer behaviors and motivations. And when we thought about the specific ways supply chain was being impacted by COVID, we conducted in-depth interviews (via Spotlight Survey) with supply chain leadership – including buyers, distributors, and OEMs – working in manufacturing industries such as consumer goods, aerospace, health care, high-tech and light industrial.
Although a boom in demand caught many in supply chain totally off guard, our research revealed that many organizations became more resourceful in the face of unprecedented demand.
From our interviews with supply chain managers, we learned how key stakeholders are changing the way they think about supply chain issues. Companies can demonstrate leadership across the supply chain in order to take advantage of the new value equation. Insights include:
- Change focus from inside-out to outside-in
- Quality is now a variable – not the variable
- Making supply chain more solution-focused than process-focused is a needed step
- Time is on the side of supply chain … for now
- Finished goods are the emphasis
